DRINKS! With 82 runs needed off the last 6 overs, Pakistan Women will need a sort of innings from Aliya Riaz, which Richa Ghosh played for India Women, or even better. India are in touching distance to the finish line but they’ll be looking to wrap this game early if they can, as that will help their NRR. Pakistan Women last hit a boundary on 9.4.

Shafali Verma to Aliya Riaz, Oh, what happened there? Drifting down leg on a fractionally fuller length, and Riaz tries to work it across but fails to get her bat in front of the pad. The ball seemingly clips the flap of her front pad before rolling away on the leg side. The batters sense a quick single before Riaz is sent back. Richa swoops across, and there is an appeal for LBW that gets turned down. Richa also senses a run out chance but misses her shy at the striker’s end from almost a point-blank range. India go upstairs for the LBW anyway, and while UltraEdge is checked, there is no conclusive evidence of whether the ball struck the pad first or the bat. The on-field call of not out stands as the benefit of doubt is given to the batter.

231 More Updates

India begin their Women’s T20 World Cup campaign against Pakistan with plenty of expectations after winning the ODI World Cup last year. One area India will be watching closely is the performance of opening batters Smriti Mandhana and Shafali Verma. Both remain among the most dangerous players in women’s cricket, but recent form has been inconsistent. After scoring 82 against Australia in Adelaide, Mandhana’s next six scores were 13, 12, 37, 0, 32 and 8. Shafali’s returns have also been modest. Following her 64 against South Africa in Johannesburg, she managed scores of 9, 4, 2, 22 and 11 in her next five innings. India know that strong starts often make the difference in T20 cricket. If Mandhana and Shafali can fire together, India could immediately put Pakistan under pressure and provide a platform for the middle order to build on.
